Compare Two PDFs Side by Side and Spot Every Difference
Reviewing document revisions shouldn't mean reading two PDFs line by line. EasyPDF's comparison tool analyzes both versions of your document and highlights every change — text additions, deletions, formatting shifts, and content modifications — so you can see exactly what changed at a glance. Upload your original and revised PDFs, and our diff engine scans every page, every paragraph, and every word.
Results appear in a clear side-by-side view with color-coded highlights: green for additions, red for deletions, and yellow for modifications. Whether you're verifying contract redlines, checking translated documents, or auditing report revisions, EasyPDF gives you confidence that nothing slipped through. No software to install, no account required, completely free.
Behind the scenes, our diff engine combines a Myers-style longest-common-subsequence algorithm with PDF-aware text extraction — meaning it correctly handles columns, footnotes, tables, and reading order even when the visual layout has shifted between versions. The result is a reviewable diff that catches changes other tools miss: a swapped clause in a contract, a reworded liability cap, a silently-deleted footnote, a moved comma in a legal definition. Law firms, compliance teams, translators, and editors use EasyPDF Compare every day to ship revisions with confidence.

Real-World Use Cases for PDF Comparison
Verify Contract Redlines
A client returned a revised contract — but did they only change what they said they would? Upload both versions and instantly see every modification, from changed clauses to altered payment terms. Never miss a hidden change again.
Audit Regulatory Documents
When compliance documents are updated, you need to know exactly what changed. Compare the previous and current versions to identify new requirements, removed provisions, or modified procedures before signing off.
Review Translation Accuracy
Compare the original document structure against a translated version to verify that no sections were accidentally omitted, duplicated, or restructured during the translation process.
Track Report Revisions
Working with financial reports, academic papers, or technical documentation that goes through multiple revisions? Compare any two versions to see a clear summary of what was added, removed, or modified between drafts.
Why Legal and Compliance Teams Pick EasyPDF Compare
PDF comparison is where most free tools fall apart. They miss changes in footnotes, get confused by columns, ignore formatting shifts, or fail on scanned documents. EasyPDF's comparison engine is built to catch what others miss.
Semantic Word-Level Diffing
Our diff algorithm operates at the word level with intelligent whitespace handling — a paragraph with a single added word won't be flagged as '50 changes' just because reflow shifted every subsequent word. You get a clean, reviewable list of what actually changed, not noise.
Handles Columns, Tables, and Footnotes Correctly
Most comparators linearize the page and compare it as a single stream, which completely breaks on multi-column layouts. EasyPDF's PDF-aware extractor understands reading order, detects columns, isolates footnotes, and compares structurally similar regions against each other — so a footnote change in v2 is compared to the footnote in v1, not some random line of body text.
OCR Fallback for Scanned Documents
Got a scanned contract? EasyPDF automatically runs OCR on both files before comparing, converting image-based PDFs into comparable text. The OCR pipeline is accurate enough for legal review of printed and re-scanned documents — a use case most competitors simply don't support.
Exportable Annotated Report
Don't just view the diff on screen — download a fully annotated PDF showing every change as a highlight, with a summary page listing additions, deletions, and modifications. Share it with your team, attach it to a ticket, or keep it for your audit trail.
Inside the PDF Comparison Engine
When you upload two PDFs, our extractor walks each document's content stream and groups text into logical blocks based on position, font, and baseline metrics — reconstructing the true reading order even in complex multi-column layouts. We then run a modified Myers diff algorithm on the extracted text, with a preprocessing pass that normalizes whitespace, quote characters, and dashes to avoid false positives from cosmetic differences.
Structural metadata (headings, lists, tables, footnotes) is preserved and used as anchor points, so a single inserted paragraph doesn't cascade into a thousand 'moved' annotations. For scanned PDFs, both files pass through our OCR pipeline first — the OCR output is cached per document so if you re-run a comparison on the same file later, it's near-instant.
Finally, the results are rendered into an interactive side-by-side view with synchronized scrolling, and you can export the full diff as a color-annotated PDF with a summary table.
